私の英語力

私は、中学生の頃から勉強が苦手で、特に英語と数学が苦手でした。

当時は中一から英語の学習が始まったのですが、先生にあてられてテキストをスラスラ読む同級生を見て、焦りのような気持ちを覚えました。

「皆どうしてそんなに英語ができるの？！」と半ばパニックになったのを覚えています。

私の英語力はその後も伸びず、通知表に２が並ぶこともザラでした。

中３のギリギリで、詰込み学習をして何とか高校には進学しましたが、そこでも成績は泣かずとばず・・・。

進研ゼミ（今のBenesseですね）のテキストの問題が全く解けず、全国の受験生はこんなに難しい問題を解いているのかと涙目になったのを覚えています。

数学も英語もできないという絶望的な状態だったので、私は地元の小さな短大に進学しました。

一応、英文学専攻でしたが、ここでも遊び呆けて、ろくに勉強もしていませんでした。

短大を出る手前で、ギリギリ英検２級に合格しましたが、当時の２級なので（英作文もなかった！）、今でいうとTOEIC400点台の実力だったと思います。

学校を出たあと、「これでやっと英語から解放された！」と思いました。

二度と英語なんて学習しない、と本気で思っていました。

これが、私の学生時代の英語学習史です。

今読み返すと、まさに黒歴史ですね…。

My studying truck of English

I have not been good at English and Math since I was young.

When I was a junior high school student – It was about 25 years ago, though – I sometimes saw other students read English textbooks really fluently. I was shocked and felt upset.

"Why do they speak English so well?" I thought.

But I do not like studying, so my English skill was not improved.

I studied very hard at the end of my junior high school days, so I managed to get a permission of entering a high school.

But at the high school, I did not study seriously, I had lots of Cs on my report card.

“Shinken-zemi”, called “Benesse” now, which is a Japanese famous publisher, has been providing correspondence courses for students. I took its English course, but it was so difficult that I could not catch up with it.

I was not really good at some subjects, but I entered a small junior college in my region.

I majored English literature there but I did not spare a lot of time for studying.

Before graduating the college, I barely passed 2nd grade certificate of English proficiency test.

But the test was not so difficult than today, and my ability of English was still poor.

After graduation, I thought “I was freed from studying now! I’ll never study English from now on!"”

That was all my English learning track record in my school days.

Looking back on my history, I think it is really shameful.
