場違いの場所に放り込まれて
それからは、一度の離婚を経験しながらも、何とか生きてきました。
正規の職につくことなく、役所の臨時職員などを転々として、疲れるとやめる、ということを繰り返していました。
子供が生まれて一歳になった頃に、それまで契約社員として勤めていた会社をやめ、再就職先を探し始めました。満員電車での遠距離通勤に疲れてしまったのです。
その際に紹介されたのが、今の会社になります。
外資系とはいえ、日本支社なのでそれほど英語を使う機会はないだろうと楽観的に考えていた私。
それが間違いだったことは、入社初日にわかりました。
周囲で飛び交う、英語、英語、英語…。
オフィスでは日本語ですが、skype会議の際は皆英語を使用。
海外からかかってくる電話も英語。
届くメールも英語…。
もちろん、英語を放棄して20数年の私にはかなり過酷な世界でした。
アドミとはいえ、英語を話せないと誰にも相手にしてもらえません。
周囲は専門職の一人事務な上、英語を話せない私…。
足手まとい以外の何者でもありませんでした。
軽蔑の視線をうけながら、やはり別の会社にしておけばよかったと思うも、時すでに遅し。
社会経験が乏しく、40過ぎの私をパートとはいえ事務でやとってくれる会社は、多くはありません。
こうして私は、腹をくくって英語に向き合うことになりました。

Getting into hot water
After graduation, I managed to make a living though I had experienced some tough situation like divorce.
I changed my job frequently as a contractor or part-timer. Unfortunately, I have little experience as a permanent staff so finding job was sometimes very difficult.
As my son became one year old, I quit a contractor and started to look for a new opportunity because I was really exhausted by the long-distance commute.
Then after some struggling, I found my current job through a public employment security office.
Depending on each company's culture but working at a foreign-affiliated company is sometimes not easy for non-native.
I was optimistic though I cannot speak English at all.
My choice was not correct and I realized this crucial fact at my first day of the job.
I was surprised at the new circumstance because almost all employees speak English fluently.
Every online meeting is hold in English and phone calls are sometimes in English.
Of course, lots of e-mails are in English.
This circumstance was too tough for me – because I stopped learning English 20 years ago.
I was turned away in some business situations.
I was the only person as an office assistant and other employees are IT specialist.
Sometimes I interrupted their work because of my poor ability of English.
I was disappointed, but the ship has sailed.
For those who are around their 40s with no specialization, finding a new job is not easy.
So I decided to tackle this tough situation and started to learn English again.
